Type C Escort Ship

History

Classification note: “Type C” here refers to the Type C escort ship (丙型海防艦, kaibōkan), the fifth, heavily simplified mass-production generation of kaibōkan escort ships (successor to the Ukuru class) - not the numbered patrol boats converted from old destroyers (a separate, unrelated vessel family). Type C and Type D differ only in propulsion: Type C diesel, Type D turbine (the only turbine-powered kaibōkan class). Of roughly 300 planned units (odd hull numbers = Type C, even = Type D), 56 were completed. A complete roster of every unit is not maintained here.
