Tsugaru (1941)
History
A large, purpose-built fleet minelayer, designed under the 1937 Maru-3 budget incorporating lessons from Okinoshima (not a sister ship, an independent follow-on design). Sole ship. The year suffix in the title is needed because an unrelated, same-named cruiser Tsugaru (the ex-Russian “Pallada,” captured at Port Arthur in 1904, commissioned 1908, reclassified as a minelayer in 1920, scrapped 1924) carried the same name.
