Okinoshima (1936)

History

The Navy’s largest purpose-built minelayer, the first fitted with an embarked reconnaissance seaplane, commissioned 30 September 1936 (Harima/Ishikawajima-Harima). Sole ship - the similar, larger Tsugaru is an independent follow-on design, not a sister ship. The year suffix in the title is needed because an unrelated ex-Russian coast-defense ship (the captured “General-Admiral Apraksin,” 1905, decommissioned 1922) carried the same name.
