History

Laid down as a heavy cruiser, ordered converted to a light aircraft carrier on 25 August 1943 (to replace carriers lost at Midway) while still under construction. The unfinished hull was towed to Sasebo in December 1943, conversion work was halted in March 1945, and the hull was scrapped in 1946/47 - completed as neither a cruiser nor a carrier.
