Hashima
History
Built from the keel up as cable layers (also usable as minelayers), four units under the Maru-4 building programme. Hashima was originally laid down as “Hatsushima” and renamed in 1940. Not to be confused with a small (600-ton) salvage tug that was also initially named “Hashima” but was pre-emptively renamed “Kasashima” by the Navy in 1940 to avoid a name clash with this cable layer.
